Hi. I'm a peace corps volunteer and stumbled upon your blog looking for ideas for the art class I teach to special needs students. Your blog was very inspiring for me to read. Unfortunately, here in the Caribbean (yes, paradise) schools do not have access to the kinds of art supplies that are readily available in the states. Funds are not easy to come by either. I don't have a background in art, I am simply picking up where another volunteer left off, and would love to hear some ideas for inexpensive art projects, if you would have time. Things involving sand, chalk, recycled materials - the school I work at doesn't have paints or crayons or papers, I purchase all those things myself. Anyway, great blog!

I found your blog today and was thrilled. I work in an elem school that has two life skills classes. These students have some of the skills and aversions you mentioned in your posts. Thanks for you blog...it was nice to find some new ideas!

How did your students create the artwork pictured in the first 2 photographs?? I absolutely love their work!! I will be teaching art to a Special Needs Preschool this fall and would love to try some of these projects with them!!

to Lauren

the artwork in the top photos was made laying bleeding art tissue paper over a wet surface letting it blend and then dry. tissue paper falls off, then I think it was string paint over top in black.

You are my new hero! I am just about to start teaching a semester long art program and this is exactly the validation I needed to leap into some similar projects with confidence and you have certainly inspired some new ones that I hadn't considered. Thank you so much for sharing!
